Earth Day

Postby cmcgilvrey » Tue Apr 19, 2005 2:40 pm

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970.
It always falls on that same calendar date.
It was co-founded by former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin.
Earth Day is celebrated to call attention to our environment and encourage people around the world to live in balance with the only earth we've got.

Are these old wives tales true or false?

Postby cmcgilvrey » Mon Aug 15, 2005 7:20 pm

Are these old wives tales true or false?

1. Wait half an hour after eating before you go swimming or you'll get cramps.

2. If you have a sun tan you cannot get a sunburn.

3. Eating a watermelon seed is dangerous.

All false. There has never been a documented case of drowning caused by swimming on a full stomach. No matter how dark your tan is, you can still get a sunburn. Eating a watermelon seed might irritate a sensitive system, but the benefits of including fresh fruit in your diet far outweigh any risks.

Postby cmcgilvrey » Mon Aug 22, 2005 2:14 pm

Rose gardens hit their peak in August, so be sure to stop and smell the blooms. Here are a few fun facts about the queen of flowers you might not know.

There are over 10 different Rose species from which an endless supply of varieties have been produced.

The oldest rose bush is thought to be a 1,000-year-old climber on the Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.

It takes between 10,000 and 15,000 hand-picked roses to make 11 grams of rose oil, whose value by weight is 5 times greatest than gold.

Cupid was known to cause people to fall in love by shooting them with his magical arrows. But Cupid didn't just cause others to fall in love - he himself fell deeply in love with mortal Psyche.
