Beverage choices:
• Non-fat or 1% milk
• Lactaid, fat-free or low-fat
• Soy milk
• Fortified milk (blend 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder with 1 quart skim or 1% milk)
• Chicken, beef or vegetable broth, low sodium (this is not a source of protein)
• 100% fruit juice (apple, cranberry, white grape juice – diluted 50:50 with water)
• Supplemental beverages (protein drinks)

1. Begin each hour with 2 ounce of nutritious beverage (milk, juice, supplemental beverage); consume over 20 minutes. ***Important note: 1 ounce of fluid should be consumed over 10 minutes.
2. After you finish your nutritious beverage, you may sip non-carbonated, non-caloric beverages such as water, Crystal Light, Fruit 2 0, Aloe Splash, decaffeinated tea, sugar free popsicles and ice cubes.
3. Do not exceed a total of 6 ounce in an hour.
4. By the end of the day you should have consumed approximately: 12 ounces of milk, 6 ounces of juice, 14 ounces of supplemental beverages and 2 ounces of broth.
5. Don not force fluids and make yourself sick.

Stage one tips:
• Since carbonated liquids can put pressure on your pouch, all liquids need to be noncarbonated.
• Do not chew gum
• Juice should be diluted to half strength with water to avoid the dumping syndrome
• Do not force yourself to keep sipping if you are full
• Avoid straws. Sipping through them will increase pressure within your pouch
• Avoid very hot or very cold beverages as they may cause stomach discomfort.
• Resist the urge to ask a friend or family member to bring you a snack. At this stage your new stomach pouch cannot handle food and you must develop a new way of eating
